China Hasn't Lodged Any Protest Against Arrest Of Its Fishing Vessel

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Foreign Ministry has not received any protest note from China against the Indonesian Navy's step to impound a Chinese fishing vessel on the charge of encroaching upon the Indonesian waters, Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said.

"We have not received any protest note from China," she said. The minister had accompanied President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) when the Norwegian foreign minister paid a courtesy call at the Merdeka Palace here on Tuesday.

She claimed that the recent arrest of Chinese-flagged fishing vessel FV Hua Li-8 was part of the efforts to uphold the law in Indonesia's exclusive economic zone.

"What happened some time ago was really a part of the law enforcement exercise undertaken by the Indonesian authorities," she added.

The foreign minister informed that her side was in contact with the Indonesian Navy to obtain the latest information regarding the investigation into the arrest of Chinese fishing vessel.

The Indonesian Navy arrested Chinese-flagged fishing vessel FV Hua Li-8 in Belawan, North Sumatra, on April 22.

The Indonesian Navy personnel aboard Indonesian warships, KRI Viper-820 and KRI Pati Unus 384, made the arrest after receiving a tip-off that the vessel was a fugitive of Argentine Interpol.

"Shortly after receiving the tip-off, the Navy sent two warships to chase it," head of the Indonesian Navy's information service, Commodore Adi Sucipto, disclosed. (WDY)
